IN HIS OWN WORDS
Founder/CEO, Shahid Azim

A real elevator pitch

The experience has been one of partnership and leveraging the collective learnings of the KV team.It was quite literally an elevator pitch to Vinod. It was outside the green room as he was getting ready to deliver a keynote at a conference. That same day, we spent another hour together followed by a technical call the next week. Then, we were asked to present to the KV partnership the following week and got a term-sheet the same evening. It took two to three more weeks to iron out all the details. It went really, really quickly.

Our first choice

This is my third venture-backed company and for one of my co-founders, it’s his fifth. We were coming into this with some experience under our belts. There were only a handful of VCs we wanted to connect with, and Vinod was at the top of our list. Vinod’s take on healthcare is highly aligned with what we want to achieve. The vision we’re chasing is a big one, and we wanted a VC who had the ability to help us navigate our way to creating a high impact company. KV was our first choice.

Critical junctures

KV actually works with you to think about how to build a high impact company.Vinod challenges you in ways that force you to think about things critically and differently. Having built successful companies with entrepreneurs his advice at the seed stage can radically change the trajectory of early stage companies. It’s definitely a non-traditional way of operating relative to 80 to 90-percent of other VCs. For us, the experience has been one of partnership and leveraging the collective learnings of the KV team.

Intellectual property (IP) strategy

There’s been a lot of learning for our whole team in terms of the strategic nature of IP – being able to consistently capture and build a broad portfolio. IP is one of the things that sometimes gets lost in everything else that we’re doing as a startup, but it’s a critical asset and value driver. KV has helped us build a strong foundation and develop the processes necessary to sustain it.

Walks the walk

KV actually works with you to think about how to build a high impact company. Vinod is not just talk; he actually walks the walk and helps you execute. Not to mention the operating partners — Euan Thomson, with deep medical background, has been a real collaborator and advisor through our growth. Just instrumental in navigating the regulatory environment and make valuable and timely choices.
